Herman Sommermeier was a German teacher at Chigwell School in 1913, before he died fighting for his home country in the First World War.
This staple‑bound booklet is a reprint, edited and introducted by Nicholas Dixon (OC 2004-2011), of Sommermeier's fascinating account of what Chigwell School was like before the war, originally published in 1914. This Chigwell teacher and his poignant story were the probable inspiration for Max Staefel in James Hilton's famous story 'Goodbye Mr. Chips', adapted into two famous films.
Neatly produced and ideal for reading or collecting, this booklet is 21cm (w) x 25.5cm (h) and will appeal to alumni, historians, and anyone with an interest in educational or local history.
