We are delighted to share the findings of our most recent ISI inspection, which took place over three days in April 2026. All UK independent schools are inspected regularly by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). Ten inspectors visited us between the 21st and 23rd of April, and we are proud to confirm that Chigwell met all required standards across every area of school life and was awarded a Significant Strength.
A Significant Strength is the highest commendation the Independent Schools Inspectorate can award. It recognises provision that goes well beyond what is required and reflects a genuinely distinctive aspect of a school's life.
The inspectors identified the way in which our wellbeing, co-curricular and student leadership programmes work together as a Significant Strength.
"The development of wellbeing and extensive co-curricular and student leadership programmes, which work cohesively together, promote a strong sense of community and belonging among pupils, based on trust and mutual respect."
Areas of excellence:
Wellbeing and Pastoral care
Inspectors looked carefully at how we care for pupils and were clear in their findings. At Chigwell, pastoral care is embedded in everything we do. Every member of staff understands that a pupil’s ability to learn and grow is closely connected to how safe, known and supported they feel.
In the report you can read: "Leaders create a warm and inclusive culture characterised by mutual respect, support and kindness."
Academic Excellence
The quality of teaching and learning across the school was strongly recognised. Our curriculum is broad and ambitious, and our teachers work hard to build classrooms where pupils feel confident, think independently, take risks, and connect with the world beyond school.
In the report, you can read: “Pupils benefit from a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that promotes academic achievement alongside personal development in intellectual, aesthetic, creative and physical fields.”
A Rich Co-Curricular Experience
The range of activities available to pupils at Chigwell is wide, and the inspection report reflected the extent to which pupils gain from taking part.
The inspectors write in the report: “These opportunities develop pupils’ leadership skills and promote a culture of service and social responsibility.”
Whether through sport, the arts, community projects or leadership roles, pupils develop skills and confidence that carry well beyond their time at school.
Strong Leadership and Community
The inspection also affirmed the quality of leadership across Chigwell School. The inspectors found that Chigwell's strategic direction is clear and well-resourced, and that the school's values are genuinely lived.
The report states that: “Leaders foster a supportive community, an adventurous spirit and an inclusive ethos that embodies the school’s values of happiness, courage and resilience, an innovative approach, kindness and lifelong learning.”
